Analyst Report: HUM
1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Humana rose 11.56% to $431.87 on Friday 9 October 2026, on volume of 4,989,900 shares (4.25x the 50-session average), after CMS published its 2027 Medicare Advantage star ratings late on Thursday. Humana said 95% of its Medicare Advantage members will be in plans rated 4.0 stars or above in 2027, against 20% in 2026 (CNBC), and J.P. Morgan had expected 60% to 70%. A Baird upgrade to Outperform with a $596 target landed in the same session. Peers rose between 1.27% and 2.93% over the period, so most of Humana's move came from its own ratings result. The stock hit a 52-week high of $456.50 intraday and closed below it. The next scheduled test is third-quarter earnings on 6 November 2026.
2. THE CATALYST
CMS released the 2027 star ratings data late on Thursday 8 October (CNBC). Thursday's session closed at $387.12 (-2.37%), and the reaction came on Friday.
Figures from the research brief:
- Humana's press release said 95% of Medicare Advantage members are in plans rated 4.0 stars or above, and 42% are in 4.5-star plans for 2027.
- CNBC reported the prior-year share as 20% and J.P. Morgan's expectation as 60% to 70%. Fierce Healthcare and StockStory give 25% for the prior year, and Healthcare Dive and a Stephens report cited by Fierce give 93% for 2027. The sources disagree on these figures.
- StockStory reported that contract H5216, Humana's largest, returned to 4.0 stars. Barclays had earlier put that contract at about 2.4 million members (Ad-hoc News).
- TD Cowen's Ryan Langston estimated the recovery could add $3 billion or more of revenue in 2028, because 2028 payments adjust on 2027 stars (Healthcare Dive).
- Reuters said shares rose 15% in premarket trading, and Motley Fool cited a 13% jump at midday. The close of +11.56% was lower than both.
Analyst actions that day:
| Firm | Action | Target |
|---|---|---|
| Baird (Michael Ha) | Neutral to Outperform | $596 from $390 |
| Oppenheimer | Buy kept, target raised | $475 from $405 |
| Barclays | Overweight; dates and targets conflict across sources | Unverified |
StockStory said Ha pointed to greater confidence in more than $35 of adjusted EPS in 2028. The Barclays history is unverified: one source dates an upgrade to 25 September with a $515 target, and Yahoo lists a 9 October change from $515 to $582.
3. COMPANY PROFILE
Humana provides medical and specialty insurance in the United States through two segments, Insurance and CenterWell. The Insurance segment sells individual and group Medicare Advantage, stand-alone prescription drug plans, Medicare supplements, and dental, vision, life and disability cover. Market capitalisation is $51.86bn. Competitors in managed care include UnitedHealth, Elevance, Centene and CVS.
Defense World reported that Humana reaffirmed its 2026 adjusted earnings outlook and raised its outlook for 2028 Stars-related revenue. A TipRanks headline on the CNN quote page refers to a 2026 guidance cut on the same day. I could not settle the conflict from a primary release. The consensus for the next quarter is an EPS loss of $1.00 on revenue of $40.89bn. The stock trades at 26.0 times forward earnings and 40.8 times trailing earnings.
A third-party site says Humana told investors in August that it will exit Medicare Advantage plans covering roughly 600,000 members for the 2027 plan year. I did not verify this in a primary filing.
4. DEEP DIVE ANALYSIS
Do fundamentals justify the move? Star ratings drive both the bonus payments Humana receives and the rebates it can fund benefits with, and 2028 payments follow the 2027 ratings. Humana's share of members in 4-star-or-better plans fell from 94% in 2024 to 25% in 2025 and 20% in 2026 (Healthcare Dive), so a return to the mid-90s restores a large part of what was lost. The 95% result also exceeded J.P. Morgan's 60% to 70% expectation. On that basis a double-digit gain has a clear earnings logic. The financial benefit arrives in 2028, so the move prices a forecast that runs well beyond the next few quarters.
Comparable episode. On 2 October 2024 Humana disclosed that only 25% of members were in 4-star-or-better plans for 2025, and the stock fell about 15% (Fierce Healthcare). Contract H5216 dropped from 4.5 stars to 3.5 stars, and Kiplinger noted a 12% fall the previous day when the CMS plan finder showed the ratings. The same contract has now reversed the damage, and Barclays' September upgrade tied its thesis to H5216 reaching bonus status (Ad-hoc News).
Peer read-across. UNH, ELV and CNC rose 2.25%, 2.93% and 1.27% over the period. J.P. Morgan estimated UnitedHealth's share of enrollees in 4+ star plans falling to about 67% from 81%, and CVS's to about 70% from 84% (CNBC). CVS shares dipped on the news (Yahoo Finance headline) and Alignment Healthcare fell sharply (Healthcare Dive). Humana's gain is therefore relative, and it gained against a field where rivals lost ratings.
Bull case. The 2028 revenue uplift TD Cowen estimates at $3 billion or more, Baird's view that EPS above $35 in 2028 is achievable, and a $596 Baird target that sits well above the close.
Bear case. The stock is up 64.51% year to date and trades at 26.0 times forward earnings, so much of the recovery is in the price. The 2028 benefit depends on the 2027 ratings holding and on medical costs staying contained. The reported 600,000-member exit and the unresolved guidance conflict add uncertainty.
5. TECHNICAL SNAPSHOT
The close of $431.87 sits above the 50-day average of $388.02 and the 200-day average of $296.18, and 167% above the 52-week low of $161.90 from 20 March. The session reached a 52-week high of $456.50 and closed below it, after opening at $450.49, so the stock gave back part of its early gains. Volume of 4,989,900 was 4.25x the 50-session average of 1,175,456. The nearest support in the recent closes is $404.27 from 6 October, and no close in the table sits above the latest, so no resistance level is named from the closes; the $456.50 intraday high is the reference point.
6. RISK FACTORS
- Fading of the opening gain: the close sat well below the open and the intraday high, which can indicate selling into strength. This is inference.
- Ratings data conflicts: sources differ on the 2027 share (93% to 95%) and the prior-year share (20% or 25%).
- Guidance conflict: the reaffirmation reported by Defense World and the TipRanks cut headline have not been reconciled.
- Membership exits: the reported 600,000-member exit for 2027 is unverified.
- Valuation: the stock trades at 26.0 times forward earnings after a 64.51% year-to-date rise.
- Rating volatility: the 2024 episode showed a single contract can move the stock about 15% in one session.
Upcoming dates: third-quarter earnings on 6 November 2026 (EPS estimate -1.0, revenue estimate $40.89bn). One CNBC page refers to a February date that looks stale, so the 6 November date stands unless the company says otherwise. The ex-dividend date is 29 October on CNN and 30 October on Yahoo, with a $0.885 dividend per Yahoo.
7. ACTIONABLE OUTLOOK
Short term (1-2 weeks): The stock opened at $450.49 and closed at $431.87, so the first test is whether $404.27 holds as support after a gain of this size. Further target raises from brokers would support the price, and a retreat toward the 50-day average of $388.02 would follow if the gain unwinds.
Medium term (1-3 months): The 6 November earnings report is the main event. Clarity on 2026 guidance, the 2027 membership outlook and commentary on 2028 Stars revenue will decide whether the $596 Baird target gains acceptance. Consensus expects a quarterly loss, so the market will focus on guidance.
Long-term thesis: The ratings recovery repairs the main earnings headwind identified since 2024, and the 2028 payment year carries the benefit. The thesis now rests on execution and on holding the ratings in later years. This is analysis only and not personal financial advice.
