Analyst Report: SBAC
1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
SBA Communications rose 13.88% over the week to a close of $184.28 on Monday 12 October 2026, from $161.82 on 5 October. The largest single session was Friday 9 October, when the stock gained 7.34% on volume of 2,355,500 shares. Blockspace reports that SpaceX agreed to buy Grain Management's nationwide 800 MHz low-band spectrum, which makes a terrestrial SpaceX network more plausible and would need tower sites. Peers moved the same way over the period (AMT +12.51%, CCI +19.87%), so the move is a sector re-rating rather than a company-specific one. A second, smaller driver was a Raymond James target increase on 5 October. The 6 October gain of 4.87% has no confirmed cause in the research. The spectrum purchase still needs FCC approval, and the price is unconfirmed. The stock has recovered most of its September losses and sits just below its 200-day average.
2. THE CATALYST
Blockspace reports that SpaceX agreed to buy Grain Management's nationwide 800 MHz spectrum, up to 14 MHz of paired low-band spectrum, subject to FCC sign-off. Blockspace's reading is that tower owners benefit because a ground network needs sites. Timing is partly unclear: Blockspace says SpaceX posted the news on Friday 9 October, while a MarketWatch headline timed 00:52 UTC on 9 October and a CNBC link dated 8 October point to Thursday evening. Investing.com reports tower stocks rising in aftermarket trade on Thursday 8 October, which supports the earlier date. SBAC closed at $170.01 on 8 October, then at $182.49 on 9 October.
Blockspace also describes a Bernstein model in which a small amount of low-band spectrum cuts the sites needed for a greenfield network by about 30%. In the national scenario, required macro sites fall from 85,858 to 56,705 with Grain's spectrum. The Bernstein note was published on Thursday 8 October according to Blockspace, though that date is inferred from the implied-upside math and the aftermarket move.
Carriers fell on 9 October. Blockspace reports Verizon down 6.9%, AT&T down 8.4% and T-Mobile US down 9.6% shortly after the open, a combined loss of about $45bn.

Raymond James (analyst Richard Prentiss) kept Outperform and attributed the higher target to lower cash-tax assumptions, noting that earlier cash-tax estimates were overly punitive. It trimmed 2026 AFFO per share to $12.19 from $12.20. Investing.com and Streetinsider say Outperform, while StocksToTrade and Robinhood describe Strong Buy.
3. COMPANY PROFILE
SBA Communications is a Real Estate specialty REIT and a leading independent owner and operator of wireless communications infrastructure. It leases space on towers, rooftops and other structures to wireless service providers, and manages sites for property owners. It owned 46,328 towers at 31 December 2025. Its main competitors are American Tower and Crown Castle. Market capitalisation is $19.55bn, forward P/E is 22.5, trailing P/E is 19.9 and the dividend yield is 2.74%.
For the second quarter of 2026 (SBA 8-K, 3 August), the company reported net income of $1.87 per share, AFFO per share of $3.05 and a quarterly dividend of $1.25. It issued $3.5bn of inaugural investment-grade senior notes, received an upgrade to BBB from S&P and set up a $2.5bn revolver. The CEO described results as in line with expectations, said customers were upgrading sites, and said new tower construction was ramping in Central America for Millicom.
4. DEEP DIVE ANALYSIS
Do fundamentals justify the move? The spectrum deal changes no SBAC cash flows today. Blockspace says the transaction needs FCC approval, and no date is sourced. Bernstein says build pace is limited by crews, zoning and utility interconnection, and sees the national case taking about eight years at maximum pace. Starlink Mobile satellites were said in August to begin flying in 2027, with service targeted for late 2027, and that timeline does not cover the Grain band. My inference is that the rally prices an option on future tower demand, not near-term earnings.
Peer read-across. AMT rose 12.51% and CCI 19.87% over the same period, so SBAC's 13.88% sits between them. Bernstein rates American Tower and Crown Castle Outperform and SBAC Market-Perform with a $219 target, so its upside case is strongest for the peers. Bernstein also argues the deal undercuts the view that satellite direct-to-device service makes towers obsolete, and that towers have value even without a full build.
Analyst targets. Morgan Stanley cut its target to $205 and kept Equal Weight, citing near-term AFFO pressure from higher rates and Brazil churn, and calls 2026 a trough year with re-acceleration expected in 2027. Barclays kept Overweight with a minor cut to $207. StocksToTrade puts consensus at Overweight with an average target near $224.65. Dates and prior targets for the Morgan Stanley and Barclays changes are not sourced. The close of $184.28 sits below every target in the brief.
Comparable episodes. The research found no earlier SBAC episode tied to a similar catalyst, and could not verify the stock's reaction to the August results or to the 11 August T-Mobile/Grain closing. In that earlier deal, Blockspace reports, T-Mobile sold the same spectrum to Grain for $2.9bn in cash plus Grain's 600 MHz licenses.
Bull case. A terrestrial SpaceX build needs sites, and Bernstein's model still requires 56,705 macro sites with Grain's spectrum. Lower cash-tax assumptions lift Raymond James's valuation, the balance sheet has investment-grade support, and Morgan Stanley expects 2027 re-acceleration.
Bear case. Analyst Tim Farrar says the band is limited, and reliable urban in-building coverage would still need an expensive ground network. The deal price is unconfirmed: a Yahoo/Simply Wall St piece says about $8bn in cash, while Blockspace says none was disclosed. Higher rates pressure AFFO per Morgan Stanley, and the rally has run ahead of any announced SBAC contract.
5. TECHNICAL SNAPSHOT
The $184.28 close sits above the 50-day average of $179.00 and below the 200-day average of $188.71. It is $27.68 above the 52-week low of $156.60, set on 5 October, and well under the 52-week high of $221.58 from 20 April. Friday's volume of 2,355,500 was well above the 50-session average of 1,006,702, which marks the spectrum news as the session with real conviction. Monday's 848,900 shares were 0.84x the average, so the follow-through gain came on light trading. The nearest support in the recent closes is $182.49 from 9 October, with $170.38 from 7 October below it. The 200-day average at $188.71 is the nearest overhead marker.
6. RISK FACTORS
- FCC approval of the SpaceX/Grain transaction is required, with no sourced date.
- The deal price is unconfirmed, and SpaceX's plans for the band are not disclosed in the brief.
- Build timelines are long, with Bernstein's eight-year maximum-pace national case and service targeted for late 2027 for the next-generation satellites.
- Higher rates and Brazil churn, cited by Morgan Stanley, pressure near-term AFFO.
- A fade in sector enthusiasm would reverse a rally built on a single headline, and the 4.87% gain on 6 October has no identified driver to anchor it.
Upcoming dates: Q3 2026 earnings on 2 November after the close, with a 5:00pm ET call (MarketBeat). The consensus estimate is EPS of 2.09 on revenue of $724.97m. The CFO is due to speak at the RBC Capital Markets communications and infrastructure conference, with no date sourced.
7. ACTIONABLE OUTLOOK
Short term (1-2 weeks). The stock trades between support at $182.49 and the 200-day average at $188.71. Light volume on Monday gives the rally little fresh confirmation. A move through $188.71 on rising volume would extend it, and a close below $182.49 would put the 7 October close of $170.38 in view. Any FCC news or SpaceX comment on the spectrum is the main source of headlines.
Medium term (1-3 months). The third-quarter results on 2 November are the first company update since the rally. Investors will look for commentary on carrier demand, rate pressure and Brazil churn, which Morgan Stanley flags. The stock needs a further 19% to reach the $219 Bernstein target and about 22% to reach the $224.65 consensus average.
Long-term thesis. The Grain deal adds a possible new tenant source and weakens the argument that satellites make towers obsolete, yet it changes no contracted revenue. Bernstein's Market-Perform rating on SBAC itself indicates the thesis has improved without a clear change in earnings power. This is analysis, not personal financial advice.
