Analyst Report: LRCX
1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Lam Research fell 12.82% over the week to close at $230.10 on Friday 23 October 2026, and nearly all of the damage came in one session. After the September-quarter results on 21 October, the stock dropped 11.76% on 22 October, when the CFO said the December-quarter revenue guide would have been higher without near-term supply chain constraints. Results beat, and the guide of $8.6 billion, plus or minus $400 million, fell short of elevated buy-side expectations, according to TradingKey and Bernstein. The stock had already lost ground for five sessions before the report, and a broad AI-chip selloff added to the pressure. Analysts cut targets but kept positive ratings, and management says any slipped shipments move into the March quarter, so the damage looks tied to timing and valuation. Friday's flat close at $230.10 gives no sign yet of a recovery.
2. THE CATALYST
Lam reported September-quarter results after the close on 21 October (Lam Research newsroom). The stock sold off in the 22 October session, closing down 11.76% on volume of 22,998,200 shares.
| Item | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $8.22 billion | Lam 8-K, Exhibit 99.1 |
| GAAP diluted EPS | $2.19 | Lam 8-K, Exhibit 99.1 |
| Non-GAAP EPS | $2.20 | Lam 8-K, Exhibit 99.1 |
| December-quarter revenue guide | $8.6 billion, plus or minus $400 million | Finimize |
| December-quarter non-GAAP EPS guide | $2.33, plus or minus $0.15 | Finimize |
| December-quarter gross margin guide | 52.5%, plus or minus 1 point | Ad-hoc News |
According to 24/7 Wall St., the CFO said on the call that revenue guidance would have been higher without near-term supply chain constraints, which the company is actively managing, and he declined to quantify the lost revenue. Yahoo Finance reported the stock fell as much as 11% intraday after the remark.
Finimize and TradingKey both reported that Lam expects China to be a significantly smaller share of revenue in the December quarter, after China made up over a third of September-quarter revenue. TradingKey and Bernstein (via Kucoin) described a sell-the-news reaction: the beat was narrow for a stock on rich multiples, and the guide missed elevated expectations.
Yahoo Finance reported that the PHLX semiconductor index fell more than 6% in the 22 October session. Investing.com (via Yahoo Finance) cited LYNX describing the decline as going beyond fundamentals, with the Nasdaq Composite down 2.6% that day. The 23 October session was flat, at -0.02%.
3. COMPANY PROFILE
Lam Research designs, manufactures, markets, refurbishes and services semiconductor processing equipment used in chip fabrication. Its products include ALTUS deposition systems for tungsten and molybdenum metallization, SABRE electrochemical deposition products for copper interconnect, and Striker atomic layer deposition products. It sits in the Semiconductor Equipment & Materials industry alongside Applied Materials, KLA, Teradyne and Qnity (ticker Q in the peer set).
Recent results from the company's newsroom: revenue rose about 22% sequentially from the June quarter, gross margin was 52.3% and operating margin 40.0%. StockTitan reported that Lam repurchased about $1.02 billion of stock in the quarter and raised the quarterly dividend to $0.33 from $0.26. Per Investing.com, management indicated 2027 wafer fab equipment spending above $200 billion with systems revenue growth above 30%. Bernstein noted the company expects customer support growth above 15% and a sharply increased buyback. 24/7 Wall St. quoted CEO Tim Archer saying the company has visibility through 2028.
The market capitalisation is $287.95bn, with a forward P/E of 19.6 and a trailing P/E of 39.9.
4. DEEP DIVE ANALYSIS
Do fundamentals justify the move? The quarter beat the company's own prior guide of $8.10 billion for revenue, according to Ad-hoc News, and the outlook for 2027 spending and 2028 visibility stayed intact. The guide itself carries the problem. The supply and clean-room constraint limits shipments in the near term, and Kucoin/Bernstein and Investing.com reported that management expects slipped shipments to land in the March quarter. In my inference, a timing shift of that kind justifies a smaller drop than 11.76%, and the size of the fall comes from positioning and valuation going into the print. The China comment adds a separate concern, because China's share of revenue is expected to shrink.
Pre-existing weakness. The stock lost ground on five straight sessions from 12 October, falling from $309.56 to $263.94 by 16 October before a 3.13% bounce on 19 October. Evercore cut its target to $315 from $355 on late-cycle valuation concerns (Ad-hoc News). The 20-session change of -27.00% shows the slide started well before the report.
Peers. Over the same week Applied Materials fell 7.83%, KLA 12.15%, Teradyne 4.97% and Qnity 4.80%. KLA fell almost as much as Lam, which points to sector-wide pressure. Yahoo Finance reported that Applied Materials, ASML and other equipment makers also fell on 22 October. TIKR attributed an AMD decline of about 8% to Lam's supply warning, and Stocktwits linked the tech selloff to Meta's capex plans and Netflix results; both are headline-level items.
Comparable episode. Motley Fool recorded a fall of about 7% after the 26 January 2022 report, when Lam beat the quarter and cited industry-wide supply chain constraints. The 2026 drop is larger, but the pattern of a beat followed by a weaker reaction to the outlook is the same.
Analyst reaction.
| Firm | New target | Prior target | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bernstein | $350 | $385 | Outperform |
| BofA | $345 | $385 | Buy |
| Needham | $290 | $390 | Buy |
| Mizuho | $360 | $365 | Outperform |
| Morgan Stanley (single source, unconfirmed) | $339 | $385 | Not given |
| B. Riley (19 October) | $338 | $390 | Buy |
| Evercore ISI | $315 | $355 | Outperform |
| Deutsche Bank (19 October) | $375 | $320 | Not given |
MarketBeat put the consensus target at about $361.85 with a "Moderate Buy" rating. Every target in the table sits above the $230.10 close, with Needham's $290 the lowest. Needham's cut of $100 was the steepest.
Bull case. Demand visibility through 2028, wafer fab equipment spending above $200 billion in 2027, a larger buyback and a higher dividend support earnings. The forward P/E of 19.6 is well below the trailing 39.9, which reflects the earnings growth analysts expect.
Bear case. The supply limit has no quantified cost, China exposure is shrinking, and analysts had already questioned late-cycle valuation. The AI-chip selloff may continue to pull the sector down regardless of Lam's own numbers.
5. TECHNICAL SNAPSHOT
The $230.10 close sits below both the 50-day average of $302.22 and the 200-day average of $283.02, and 47.5% below the 52-week high of $438.03 set on 30 June. It remains well above the 52-week low of $134.88. Of the closes listed, $230.10 is the lowest, so no nearby support level exists in the table. The nearest resistance is the $260.81 close of 21 October, the last close before the gap down. Friday's volume of 12,731,400 was 1.41x the 50-session average of 9,003,896, which shows continued heavy turnover after the 22 October volume of 22,998,200, with the price holding flat.
6. RISK FACTORS
- Supply and clean-room limits could persist beyond the December quarter, and management has not quantified the revenue affected.
- China revenue falling as a share of sales removes a large part of recent demand.
- The AI-chip selloff and rotation into Treasuries and defensives (Yahoo Finance) may extend.
- Late-cycle valuation concerns, raised by Evercore, may keep weighing on equipment stocks.
- The Morgan Stanley target and the Mizuho note date are not fully confirmed.
Upcoming dates: TokenPost found no dated catalyst for the next earnings release. The December quarter ends on 27 December 2026. The research found no regulatory decisions, votes or investor-day dates.
7. ACTIONABLE OUTLOOK
Short term (1-2 weeks): The stock held at $230.10 on Friday after the gap down, with no earnings date ahead. Direction will follow semiconductor sector sentiment and the AI-chip trade. A recovery toward $260.81 would need the sector to stabilise; a break below Friday's close would put the stock in territory with no recent trading reference.
Medium term (1-3 months): Evidence on whether shipments slip into the March quarter as management expects will matter most, along with any quantification of the supply constraint and further detail on China. Analyst targets between $290 and $375 remain well above the current price.
Long term: Management's 2027 spending view and visibility through 2028 are unchanged, so the long-term thesis stands on the brief's evidence. The valuation and China exposure questions are open. This is analysis only and not personal financial advice.
