Analyst Report: MRNA
1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Moderna closed at $214.16 on October 28, down 12.87% from $245.81 on October 21, and almost all of that loss came in one session. On Thursday October 22 the shares fell 17.57% to $202.63 on volume of 49,947,200 after Phase 3 INTerpath-001 melanoma data for intismeran plus Keytruda leaked ahead of its scheduled Saturday presentation. The efficacy figures were positive, with a 42% reduction in the risk of recurrence or death, and UBS described the reaction to Reuters as a "sell the news" event after a months-long rally. The stock has since recovered part of the loss, rising 5.7% from the October 22 close to October 28. The 52-week high of $254.48 was set on October 21, the day before the leak. The forward P/E of -46.9 and a market cap of $85.50bn put the valuation well ahead of the sell-side targets in the brief, so the next moves depend on overall survival data, regulatory filings and the November 6 earnings report.
2. THE CATALYST
The embargoed INTerpath-001 results were published early by a cancer news site and were not scheduled for release until a Presidential Session on Saturday, October 24 (Targeted Oncology, October 22). Reuters reported that Moderna and Merck, which co-sponsor the study, released the data after the leak, and that the leak sparked the stock fall. The leak source varies by outlet: Targeted Oncology and Reuters point to an oncology website, while 24/7 Wall St. cites social media.
The companies' release (BioSpace, October 22) gave these efficacy figures:
| Measure | Result |
|---|---|
| Recurrence or death risk | Cut by 42% (HR 0.58, 95% CI 0.45–0.75, p<0.001) |
| Distant metastasis or death | Cut by 38% (HR 0.62, p=0.002) |
| Benefit after six months | Piecewise HR of 0.42 |
| Two-year recurrence-free survival | 82.2% versus 70.0% for Keytruda alone (MyPharmaReviews) |
| Median follow-up | 24.6 months |
The companies said overall survival data are not yet mature but show a favorable trend, and that they are engaging with regulators (Reuters). Reuters reported intraday losses above 25%, which would have been the steepest one-day percentage fall on record and about $24 billion of market value. The close of -17.57% was smaller. Merck fell nearly 1% that day (Reuters).
A second item followed on October 27, when William Blair downgraded the stock from Outperform to Market Perform on valuation (24/7 Wall St., October 28). The shares closed up 4.59% that day at $207.97. Sources conflict on the intraday direction: Investing.com via Yahoo reported a 3% premarket slide, while 24/7 Wall St. said the stock rose. The close in the facts confirms a gain.
3. COMPANY PROFILE
Moderna is a biotechnology company in the healthcare sector that develops messenger RNA medicines. Its portfolio covers respiratory vaccines (Spikevax, mNEXSPIKE, mRESVIA), latent virus vaccines, norovirus, public health vaccines and a Lyme disease vaccine, plus oncology therapeutics including intismeran autogene. Peers in the biotechnology group include ABBV, AMGN, GILD, VRTX, REGN and BIIB. Among vaccine developers, the brief names Novavax and BioNTech.
Second-quarter 2026 revenue was $145.0 million with a GAAP net loss of $782.0 million (ad-hoc-news, October 13). The next report is due on November 6, with a consensus EPS estimate of -1.35 and revenue of $891.31m. CEO Stéphane Bancel said the results reinforce the company's view that mRNA can fundamentally change how cancer is treated (AJMC, October 23).
4. DEEP DIVE ANALYSIS
Do fundamentals justify the move? The trial met its endpoints and the hazard ratios are statistically strong, so the sell-off follows from the price paid for the outcome. The stock rose 275.79% over 60 sessions and 593.99% year to date, and it closed on October 21 within about 3% of the 52-week high. UBS framed the fall as a sell-the-news reaction. One earlier mid-stage study had shown a larger relative benefit, which feeds a debate over whether Phase 3 fell short of the bar the market had set (Money Morning, October 23). Both explanations fit the evidence, and the brief does not settle which one carries more weight.
Valuation against analyst views. The sell-side targets in the brief sit mostly far below the share price:
| Firm | Rating | Target | Date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Citi | Sell | $80 | Oct 22 |
| TD Cowen | Hold | $90 (from $40) | Oct 21 |
| Barclays | Hold | $125 | Oct 22 |
| Bernstein | Hold | $220 | Oct 26 |
| Piper Sandler | n/a | $230 (from $167) | Oct 26 |
| Oddo BHF | n/a | $251 (from $170) | undated |
Consensus target averages range from about $104 to $138 depending on the provider, which implies the shares trade well above the average. William Blair models 70–75% odds of success and $5.4bn of peak melanoma sales for intismeran, shared equally with Merck (24/7 Wall St., October 28).
Peers and read-across. Peers did not follow the drop. Over the same period ABBV rose 0.42%, AMGN 3.08%, GILD 3.67%, VRTX 0.99%, REGN 0.94% and BIIB 1.27%, while the S&P 500 fell 0.17%. 24/7 Wall St. argued that Moderna is now valued on its cancer pipeline rather than against vaccine peers. Panmure Liberum argued the data supports off-the-shelf DNA approaches such as Scancell's, which avoid per-patient manufacturing, and noted that intismeran takes about six to eight weeks to make per patient.
Bull case. The data are statistically clear, the benefit grew after six months, overall survival shows a favorable trend, and regulatory filings in adjuvant melanoma are expected. Bernstein and Piper Sandler targets near $220 to $230 and Oddo BHF at $251 sit at or above the current price.
Bear case. The valuation leaves little room, and several covering firms hold targets less than half the share price. Overall survival is immature, manufacturing time per patient is long, and the stock has already shown it can fall 17.57% in a session on good news.
5. TECHNICAL SNAPSHOT
The close of $214.16 sits well above the 50-day average of $179.75 and the 200-day average of $84.76, and about 15.8% below the 52-week high of $254.48 set on October 21. The 52-week low of $22.28 dates from November 21, 2025. The nearest support is the October 27 close of $207.97, with the October 22 close of $202.63 and the October 26 close of $198.85 below it. The nearest resistance is the October 20 close of $242.08. Volume on October 28 was 12,024,400, which is 0.47x the 50-session average of 25,361,030, so the recovery has come on thin trading. The leak session saw 49,947,200 shares change hands, roughly twice the average.
6. RISK FACTORS
- Overall survival data: immature, with no date given (BioSpace, October 22). A weak trend would challenge the valuation.
- Valuation: the forward P/E is -46.9 and the stock trades above most sell-side targets.
- Manufacturing: six to eight weeks per patient (Panmure Liberum) is an open question for scale-up.
- Competition: off-the-shelf approaches that avoid individual manufacturing.
- Volatility: the stock fell 7.82% on October 16 with no catalyst identified in the brief, and rose 6.69% on October 20.
- Financials: Q2 GAAP net loss of $782.0 million on $145.0 million of revenue.

7. ACTIONABLE OUTLOOK
Short term (1-2 weeks): The November 6 earnings report is the main scheduled event, with consensus at EPS of -1.35 and revenue of $891.31m. The stock has recovered from $198.85 to $214.16 over three sessions on lighter volume. A close above $242.08 would signal that buyers have regained control, while a close under $198.85 would put the post-leak low at risk. Analysts' targets are scattered, so price action is likely to follow headlines on regulators and publication.
Medium term (1-3 months): Direction depends on regulatory filing news, the NEJM publication and any update on overall survival. Favorable survival data and a clear filing path would support the higher targets of $220 to $251. A weak survival trend would push the stock toward the sell-side consensus range of roughly $104 to $138.
Long term: The thesis is intact on the evidence in the brief, since the Phase 3 result was positive and the companies are engaging with regulators. The valuation already assumes substantial success, with William Blair modelling 70–75% odds. This is analysis, not personal financial advice.
