Analyst Report: PNR
1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Pentair rose 22.37% over the week to a close of $64.37 on October 28, with nearly all of the gain arriving on October 27 (+12.80%) and October 28 (+3.34%). The trigger was the Q3 2026 report on October 27, where adjusted EPS of $1.18 beat a $1.08 consensus and revenue of $976.4M beat roughly $963.6M (Benzinga), even though sales fell 4% and adjusted EPS fell from $1.24. Management said the Pool channel inventory realignment is complete and pointed to about $180M of Pool sales growth in 2027 (Q3 call transcript, via Motley Fool). An RBC note on October 28 that raised its target to $69 from $61 appears to have carried the move into the second session, though only the headline was available. The shares remain 38.06% lower year to date and below the 200-day average of $75.83, so the rally recovers part of a large decline and the Pool recovery still has to appear in reported numbers.
2. THE CATALYST
Pentair reported before the open on October 27 (company press release). The shares closed at $62.29 that day on volume of 7,860,400, against a 50-session average of 3,272,362.
| Metric | Reported | Comparison | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sales | $976M (-4%) | $963.6M expected | Press release, Benzinga |
| Core sales | -5% | n/a | Press release |
| Adjusted EPS | $1.18 | $1.08 consensus; $1.24 a year earlier | Benzinga, press release |
| GAAP EPS | $0.91 | $1.12 a year earlier | Press release |
| Pool sales | $291M (-18%) | n/a | Benzinga |
| Pool segment income | $72M (-38%) | n/a | Benzinga |
Management reaffirmed the adjusted EPS midpoint of about $4.70 and lowered GAAP EPS guidance to about $3.76, from a prior range of $3.86 to $4.06 (Q2 release, July 28). The Q3 figures include an $8M one-off benefit from IEEPA refunds (press release). On the call, the CEO said the channel inventory realignment is complete, and management put 2027 Pool sales growth at about $180M, or about 14%, with a Pool return-on-sales target of about 30% (call transcript, via Motley Fool).
On October 28, the stock added another 3.34% on volume of 7,794,600. Yahoo Finance carried a headline attributing the move to an RBC note saying Pool destocking has ended and a sales recovery path is in view. GuruFocus reported that RBC kept its Sector Perform rating and raised its target to $69 from $61. The full RBC note did not load, so the thesis rests on the headline.
The +4.88% gain on October 22 has no sourced cause. The only related item is a MarketWatch headline with no body text.
3. COMPANY PROFILE
Pentair plc is an industrial water-solutions company with three segments: Flow, Water Solutions and Pool. Flow covers pumps, filtration and fluid treatment systems, and Pool serves residential pool equipment. Market capitalisation is $10.40bn, with a forward P/E of 12.1, a trailing P/E of 17.0 and a dividend yield of 1.96%. The brief names no direct competitors. In the facts panel, the peer set is industrial machinery names such as PH, ITW, IR and XYL.
Recent results have been uneven. Q2 2026 sales were about $930M, down 17%, as the Pool channel inventory reset took hold, with Pool sales down 42% to $247M (Investing.com, July 28). CFO Nicholas Brazis left on July 10 and Bob Fishman became interim CFO (8-K, July 14). The brief found no update on a permanent hire.
On October 1, Pentair acquired Taco Group Holdings for $1.425 billion within the Water Solutions segment (10-Q). Benzinga reports expected Taco sales of $560 million in 2026 and more than $620 million in 2027, with EBITDA rising from about $90 million to more than $105 million. Management expects the deal to add to 2027 adjusted EPS. Pentair repurchased $350M of shares in the first nine months of 2026 (call transcript) and pays a $0.27 quarterly dividend, with 2026 the 50th consecutive year of increases (Q2 release).
4. DEEP DIVE ANALYSIS
Do fundamentals justify the move? Partly. The quarter beat expectations, but sales, GAAP EPS and adjusted EPS all fell year on year, and Pool segment income dropped 38%. The reaction therefore rests on the forward view: a completed destocking, a quantified 2027 Pool rebound and a reaffirmed adjusted EPS midpoint. The Motley Fool summary line described the stock as having "popped" on a beat despite declines in both sales and EPS (summary only; full text not read). A year-ago Pool comparison that is now much easier supports the 14% growth figure, which is inference on my part.
Comparable episode. On July 14, a preliminary Q2 update, a guidance cut and the CFO exit sent the stock down more than 21% at its worst (CoinCentral), and RBC downgraded to Sector Perform (Investing.com). The October rally of 22.37% over the week is of similar size in the opposite direction, which suggests positioning was heavily bearish going into the print. That is inference.
Peers. The brief found no sector news explaining the move. Over the same period PH fell 4.83%, ITW 0.26%, IR 4.57% and XYL 17.04%, while OTIS rose 0.72% and GWW fell 0.82%. The S&P 500 slipped 0.17%. The rally is company-specific.
Analyst reaction. Targets moved toward the share price, and the dates on several are unconfirmed.
| Firm | Action | Source and note |
|---|---|---|
| RBC | Sector Perform, target $69 from $61 | GuruFocus, Oct 28 |
| Goldman Sachs | Target $66 from $60 | MarketScreener headline, date unconfirmed |
| BNP Paribas | Upgrade to Neutral from Underperform, $65 target | MarketScreener headline, date unconfirmed |
| TD Cowen | Sell to Hold, $55 target | Timothy Sykes summary, date unconfirmed |
| Mizuho | Outperform, target $65 from $85 | StocksToTrade, single source, date unconfirmed |
Oppenheimer cut its target to $84 from $94 with an Outperform rating on October 21 (Yahoo Finance headline), before the earnings move. MarketScreener puts the mean target at about $73.60 across 17 analysts, while Timothy Sykes cites about $69.77.
Bull case. Channel destocking has ended, 2027 Pool sales are guided up about $180M with a 30% return-on-sales target, Taco adds data-center-adjacent exposure (Benzinga) and adjusted EPS guidance held. At 12.1 times forward earnings, the shares sit well below the level implied by the 52-week high of $108.50.
Bear case. Core sales fell 5%, GAAP guidance was lowered, the 2027 figures come from one call, and the CFO seat has no confirmed permanent occupant. Several analysts hold targets at or near the current price of $64.37, which leaves limited room to the stated targets from Goldman, BNP and Mizuho.
Barron's and 24/7 Wall St headlines tie Pentair to AI data-center cooling. That is headline-level narrative and not a company statement.
5. TECHNICAL SNAPSHOT
The $64.37 close is the highest in the ten-session table and sits above the 50-day average of $56.43, though it remains below the 200-day average of $75.83 and far under the 52-week high of $108.50. The low of $50.88 was set on October 8, and the stock has risen about 26.5% from it. That percentage is my calculation from the facts. No close in the table is above the latest, so no resistance level can be named from the closes. The nearest support is the October 27 close of $62.29. Volume of 7,860,400 and 7,794,600 across the two sessions ran about 2.4 times the 50-session average, which points to broad participation in the move.
6. RISK FACTORS
- The Pool recovery depends on one call and a headline-level RBC note, and a seasonal or demand miss would undercut the 2027 figures.
- Taco integration carries execution risk after a $1.425 billion purchase.
- No permanent CFO has been confirmed, and the interim arrangement dates to July.
- GAAP guidance was lowered, and the $8M IEEPA refund in Q3 is a one-off.
- Sell-side targets of $55 to $69 cluster around the current price, which limits upside from rating changes.
- The next earnings date and any investor events were not in the materials, so no dated catalyst can be given. The 2027 Pool season and Taco integration are management milestones without dates.
7. ACTIONABLE OUTLOOK
Short term (1-2 weeks): After a 22.37% week on elevated volume, the $62.29 close is the level to watch. Holding above it keeps the post-earnings gap intact, and a close below it would begin to fill the gap. This is analysis, not a forecast.
Medium term (1-3 months): Price action will follow evidence of Pool orders and channel sell-through, any confirmation of a permanent CFO, and early Taco results. Target changes from the brokers with unconfirmed dates will also shape sentiment.
Long term: The thesis has improved in one respect, because management now says the Pool reset is over, and it remains unproven because the 2027 growth and margin figures are guidance. The shares sit 38.06% lower year to date, so the market is still pricing a good deal of caution. This report is analysis only and not personal financial advice.
