Analyst Report: EFX
1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Equifax rose 11.33% to $176.54 on Tuesday 20 October 2026, after it reported Q3 results before the open. The company beat adjusted EPS ($2.26 against a $2.20 forecast), delivered revenue of $1.693bn, up 10%, held full-year adjusted EPS guidance at $8.50 and raised its AI productivity goal to $150m from $75m, according to the Equifax press release, TIKR and the Investing.com transcript. The same release cut the full-year revenue midpoint to $6.66bn from $6.75bn and guided Q4 below consensus, so the rally rested on earnings resilience and cost savings rather than on top-line strength. The shares closed 2.57x average volume, and TransUnion rose about 6.2% the same day (TIKR), which points to a sector-wide relief move. The research brief leaves several items unconfirmed, including analyst target changes and the revenue comparison with expectations.
2. THE CATALYST

Management attributed the revenue cut to a much weaker U.S. mortgage market in the second half of Q3, which it expects to persist through 2026 (TIKR, Equifax press release). It credited AI-driven cost savings for holding the EPS guide.
The premarket reaction is reported inconsistently: Yahoo Finance put the gain at about 5.6% and Investing.com at about 10.4%. Yahoo Finance also carried an early headline of a premarket dip on the below-consensus Q4 guide before the shares rallied. Motley Fool reported the stock up about 11.5% by 11:25 a.m. ET. The session opened at $166.11, which was also the day's low, and the high was $177.80, so the shares climbed for most of the day.
The brief does not reconcile the revenue comparison: Motley Fool says sales met expectations, Investing.com says revenue came in slightly below the midpoint of July guidance, and TIKR describes a full-year cut.
3. COMPANY PROFILE
Equifax is a data, analytics and technology company in the Industrials sector (consulting services), with three segments: Workforce Solutions, U.S. Information Solutions (USIS) and International. Workforce Solutions covers income, employment and related verification. Equifax co-owns VantageScore with TransUnion and Experian (TIKR), and TransUnion is its closest listed competitor in the brief. Market cap is $20.74bn, with a forward P/E of 18.3, a trailing P/E of 31.1 and a dividend yield of 1.41%.
Recent results from the brief:
- Q2 2026 (reported 21 July): revenue of $1.700bn, up 11%, U.S. Mortgage up 25%, and the AI cost-reduction target doubled to $150m (Equifax press release via SEC 8-K).
- Q1 2026: USIS mortgage revenue grew 60% (Equifax press release via SEC 8-K, 31 March).
- On 8 October Equifax said nearly 2,000 mortgage lenders and resellers used its free VantageScore 4.0 scores from April through September, and extended its $1 VantageScore 4.0 mortgage price through end-2028 (TIKR).
- The Círculo de Crédito acquisition is expected to close in Q4 2026 (Equifax press release via SEC 8-K).
4. DEEP DIVE ANALYSIS
Do fundamentals justify the move? The brief supports a partial case. Adjusted EPS beat, the full-year EPS guide barely moved, and the AI savings target gives management a lever to protect profit while mortgage volumes soften. Against that, the revenue guide fell by about $90m at the midpoint, Q4 guidance sits below consensus, and mortgage growth slowed to 15% from 25% in Q2 and 60% in Q1 (USIS). Mortgage weakness is expected to last through 2026. In my inference, the market had priced in a worse outcome, and the held EPS guide removed that fear. The pre-results rise of 7.25% on 15 October has no sourced catalyst in the brief, so some of the buying before the release is unexplained.
Peers and sector. TransUnion rose about 6.2% on 20 October ahead of its own results on 27 October (TIKR). Industrials peers in the facts panel were mixed to lower over the period (GE -3.67%, GEV -1.99%, BE -1.58%, VRT -1.22%, BA -0.50%, CAT -0.08%), and the S&P 500 gained 0.28%, so the Equifax move was specific to the credit bureau group. Barron's headline named Equifax the best S&P 500 stock that day and cited VantageScore (headline only).
Analyst actions. The brief carries only headlines. TradingView reported a 12-month target cut to $192.19, about 21% above the price at that time, with the firm and prior target unconfirmed. Investing.com reported that BMO raised its target on government growth, with no new figure. Timothy Sykes wrote that Wall Street cut targets while backing the growth story. The net effect on consensus is unknown.
Bull case. Cost savings protect EPS, the forward P/E of 18.3 is well below the trailing 31.1, VantageScore adoption is widening, and the Círculo de Crédito deal adds to International.
Bear case. Mortgage volumes are expected to stay weak through 2026, guidance for both the year and Q4 was lowered on revenue, and the stock is up 18.42% in five sessions, which leaves less room for disappointment.
5. TECHNICAL SNAPSHOT
The close of $176.54 sits above the 50-day average of $166.86 and just below the 200-day average of $177.64, so the 200-day is the immediate overhead test. The session's high of $177.80 reached just above that average. The stock remains 25.3% below its 52-week high of $236.24 (27 October 2025) and 28.9% above the 52-week low of $137.01 (30 September 2026), and it is down 16.77% year to date. Volume of 3,986,100 was 2.57x the 50-session average of 1,552,894, which confirms broad participation. Of the closes in the table, the nearest below the latest is $161.26 (15 October), which is the nearest support. The table contains no close above $176.54, so there is no resistance level among those closes.
6. RISK FACTORS
- Mortgage volumes: management expects the weaker market to persist through 2026, and Q4 revenue growth guidance of 3.5% to 5.4% is below consensus (TIKR).
- Source gaps: the revenue comparison with expectations and the analyst target changes rest on conflicting or headline-only items.
- Unexplained pre-results buying on 15 October leaves open whether positioning reverses.
- Integration: the Círculo de Crédito closing is expected in Q4 2026.
- Dated events: TransUnion reports on 27 October (TIKR). The brief gives no next Equifax earnings date, as the 20 October date in the facts panel is the report that drove this move.
7. ACTIONABLE OUTLOOK
Short term (1-2 weeks). The 200-day average at $177.64 is the first test, and TransUnion's 27 October report will move the group. A strong read-through from TransUnion would support the shares, while a mortgage-driven miss there would pressure them. After an 18.42% five-session gain, a pullback toward $161.26 is a live scenario.
Medium term (1-3 months). Direction depends on evidence that AI savings keep delivering against the $8.50 EPS guide, on the pace of the mortgage market, and on the Círculo de Crédito closing. Clarity on analyst target changes will also help, since the brief shows them only as headlines.
Long-term thesis. The brief shows no change to the structural case built on data assets, VantageScore adoption and cost efficiency. The weaker revenue outlook shifts the near-term balance toward margin-driven earnings. This is analysis only and not personal financial advice.
