Analyst Report: HAS
1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Hasbro rose 11.20% to $109.52 on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, after fiscal third-quarter results released before the open beat consensus and the company raised its full-year outlook. Adjusted EPS was $2.90 against a consensus of about $1.86 (Benzinga), and revenue of $1.595bn, up 15% year on year, topped the $1.476bn estimate. Magic: The Gathering supplied most of the strength, with quarterly revenue of $616.1M, up 34% (Motley Fool transcript). Volume reached 8,008,800 shares, 4.84x the 50-session average, and the close of $109.52 sits just under the session high of $109.81, which is also the 52-week high. Management guided to a softer fourth quarter for Magic and consumer products margin, and about $55M of tariff refunds flattered the quarter. No post-print analyst target changes were found in the research, so the sell-side response is still to come.
2. THE CATALYST
Hasbro released third-quarter 2026 results before the market open on October 20, as it announced on September 29 (Hasbro press release). The stock closed that session at $109.52, up from $98.49.
| Metric | Result | Estimate / prior |
|---|---|---|
| Adjusted EPS | $2.90 | about $1.86 consensus (Benzinga); facts panel shows $1.85 |
| Reported diluted EPS | $2.77 | n/a |
| Revenue | $1.595bn (+15%) | $1.476bn |
| Magic: The Gathering revenue | $616.1M (+34%) | first quarter above $600M |
| Wizards operating profit | $367M (+46%), 49% margin | includes $7M tariff refund benefit |
| FY revenue growth (constant currency) | 7-9% | previously 5-7% |
| FY adjusted operating margin | 27-28% | previously 25-26% |
| FY adjusted EBITDA | $1.575-1.625bn | previously $1.45-1.50bn |
The quarter included roughly $55M of tariff refunds (Investing.com). Investing.com and TIKR reported that adjusted operating profit still rose by more than a third without them. Hasbro also returned $206M to shareholders in the quarter and cut debt by $79M through bond and Treasury purchases that prefund the 2026 and 2027 maturities (Hasbro press release).
Intraday reports of the gain varied: Investing.com cited 2%, TradingKey 8.17% and Tickeron 5.93% at different points of the session. These were snapshots, and the close of +11.20% is the figure that counts. The buyback increase is reported inconsistently across sources (the company says it doubled the target; the transcript cites $200M to $400M; Benzinga cites at least $100M to at least $200M), so the size is left out here.
3. COMPANY PROFILE
Hasbro is a toy and game company in the Consumer Cyclical sector, selling trading cards, collectibles, action figures, dolls, preschool toys, plush and licensed products across the United States, Europe, Canada, Latin America, Australia and Asia. Its Wizards of the Coast and Digital Gaming segment, built around Magic: The Gathering, now drives the earnings mix. Mattel is the most direct toy competitor.
Management reported a fourth straight quarter of double-digit revenue growth. In the second quarter (July 21), Hasbro raised its outlook after Magic topped $500M in quarterly revenue for the first time (Hasbro 8-K). CEO Chris Cocks said in the release that the Magic lineup should deliver a strong finish to 2026 and continued growth in 2027. The market capitalisation is $15.45bn, with a forward P/E of 16.9 and a dividend yield of 2.84%.
4. DEEP DIVE ANALYSIS
Do fundamentals justify the move? The beat was large: adjusted EPS came in about 56% above consensus, and the raised full-year margin and EBITDA ranges imply the improvement carries into the second half. The guidance changes are sizeable, with the adjusted operating margin range lifting by two points and EBITDA by $125M at both ends. The quality of the beat has caveats. The $55M of tariff refunds helped the quarter, the CFO said the tariff benefit was fully taken in Q3, and Q4 carries heavier promotional and shipping costs (Motley Fool transcript). Cocks said fourth-quarter Magic revenue will likely be down because shipments moved into earlier periods. Oil-related input costs are also reaching the P&L, which management says it is mitigating.
Peers. Consumer discretionary peers rose between 0.07% and 1.80% over the same period (TSLA +1.54%, AMZN +0.07%, HD +1.69%, NKE +1.80%, MCD +1.59%, BKNG +0.81%), and the S&P 500 gained 0.28%. AP News and WTOP headlines on October 20 named Hasbro among strong profit reports (headlines only, not opened). The research found no sector news behind the move. In my inference, company-specific results explain nearly all of it.
Pre-print run. The shares gained 14.15% over the five sessions to the close, and volume of 3,689,600 on October 19 was the highest of the prior nine sessions. The research found no sourced cause for the October 15 rise or the October 19 volume. A WSJ report of Mattel takeover interest lifted shares about 2% on October 1, relayed by secondary sources and not confirmed by the company. Moody's moved its outlook to positive in early October (Investing.com, October 8). Citi raised its target from $107 to $117 on October 13 and UBS holds a $120 target with a Buy rating.
Bull case. Magic is growing at a rate above 30% with a 49% segment margin, guidance moved up for the second time this year, and management expects growth to continue in 2027. The Star Trek Magic set due in November is the next test (TIKR).
Bear case. Q4 Magic revenue is guided lower, margin steps down from Q3, and the close sits near the consensus one-year target of about $111.38 (Yahoo Finance), which leaves limited room against the average target. Goldman Sachs trimmed its target from $117 to $115 (StocksToTrade, undated), and Wells Fargo is Equal Weight with a $90 target set on August 20, below the current price.
No Q2 share-price reaction was found in the research, so the size of this move cannot be compared with the previous beat and raise.
5. TECHNICAL SNAPSHOT
The close of $109.52 is the highest in the daily table and sits $0.29 below the 52-week high of $109.81 set in the same session, so no resistance level from the table applies. The shares trade 18.18% above the 50-day average of $92.67 and 21.41% above the 200-day average of $90.21, with the 50-day above the 200-day. The nearest support is the prior close of $98.49, the pre-earnings level, followed by $98.76 and $98.41 from earlier in the week. Volume of 8,008,800 was 4.84x the 50-session average of 1,654,886, which marks broad participation in the gap higher. The low of $101.40 was above every close in the table before October 20.
6. RISK FACTORS
- Q4 Magic revenue is expected to fall because of earlier shipments, and consumer products margin steps down from Q3.
- Tariff refunds of about $55M do not recur, and oil-related input costs are rising.
- The post-print analyst response is unsourced, and target changes could cap or extend the move.
- The pre-print takeover report involving Mattel is unconfirmed.
- Magic momentum depends on set launches, with Star Trek Magic due in November.
Dated events: record date for the $0.70 quarterly dividend is November 18, 2026, payable December 2, 2026 (Hasbro press release). No next earnings date was found in the research.
7. ACTIONABLE OUTLOOK
Short term (1-2 weeks): Post-earnings target revisions are the main driver, with consensus near $111.38 close to the current price. The $98 to $99 area, where the stock traded before the print, is the nearest support, and holding above it would indicate the gap is being accepted.
Medium term (1-3 months): The Star Trek Magic release in November is the next check on Magic demand, and the guided Q4 softness in Magic revenue and margin sets a low bar for the next report. Follow-through depends on whether the second-half margin guidance holds as tariff refunds drop out.
Long term: The thesis of a Magic-led earnings base is intact and strengthened by a second guidance raise this year, with management pointing to growth in 2027. The tariff-refund contribution and the fourth-quarter shipment timing are the items to track. This is analysis only and not personal financial advice.
